“We estimate that researchers spend approximately 20-30%less time on documentation and information retrieval, allowing them to focus more on scientific innovation.”

About Frontera Therapeutics

Frontera Therapeutics is a global, clinical-stage gene therapy company developing innovative and accessible recombinant AAV gene therapies. The company focuses on diseases with significant unmet medical needs and strong market potential, working to deliver transformative treatment options for patients with limited or no effective therapies today.

Frontera's operations span three sites built for different stages of the therapeutic pipeline: early research in Boston, USA; clinical development in Shanghai, China; and GMP manufacturing in Suzhou, China.

A growing, multi-site R&D team

FTGEN Corp. serves as Frontera's early-stage R&D center and is based in the Greater Boston area. The team of four scientists focuses on discovery research, preclinical development, and early process development, working closely with colleagues across translational science, manufacturing, quality control, regulatory affairs, and program management to advance programs from early research through IND-enabling studies and clinical assay development.

The challenge

Fragmented tools across a growing global team

Before adopting SciSure, FTGEN's laboratory workflows relied on a combination of paper notebooks, Excel spreadsheets, shared network folders, and individual electronic documents. Experimental records, sample inventories, SOPs, and equipment information lived in different places, making it time-consuming to locate information and maintain consistency across projects.

Researchers communicated primarily through email, Microsoft Teams, and in-person discussions—workable for a small team, but a setup that would grow harder to sustain as the company's research programs expanded andrequired closer coordination with colleagues in Shanghai and Suzhou.

Anticipating these challenges early, the team began looking for an integrated digital platform that could centralize experimental records, improve traceability, simplify inventory management, and support its growing quality and compliance requirements.

The solution

One centralized platform for lab operations

SciSure provided FTGEN a centralized platform for managing laboratory operations, significantly improving the organization of its researchdata. Experimental records, sample inventories, protocols, and documentation are now maintained in a single system, making information far easier to find and share across the team.

The platform has streamlined documentation and reduced the administrative effort needed to prepare for audits, technology transfers, and project reviews. Researchers spend less time searching for information and more time on scientific work, while improved traceability of samples and experiments has strengthened data integrity and collaboration across projects.

The team relies most on SciSure's electronic lab notebook(ELN), inventory management, protocol documentation, sample tracking, and centralized search—tools that have helped standardize workflows while improving efficiency and data consistency across the organization. SciSure also now serves as a reliable data backup platform for the team.

The impact

Since adopting SciSure, FTGEN has seen improvements across documentation, traceability, and team collaboration:

  • Approximately 20-30% less time spent on documentation and information retrieval
  • Faster preparation for audits, technology transfers, and project reviews
  • Experimental records, inventories, and protocols unified in a single system
  • Stronger traceability of samples and experiments, supporting data integrity
  • A reliable, centralized data backup for the R&D team

“SciSure has become an important part of our laboratory operations. By bringing our experimental records, inventory, and documentation into a single platform, it has improved data accessibility, collaboration, and traceability across our R&D organization.”
- Zhongdong Shi,PhD, SVP and Head of R&D, Frontera Therapeutics

Looking ahead

FTGEN is happy with SciSure and expects the platform to continue playing an important role in supporting its regulatory documentation and long-term data management as the company's gene therapy programs advance.
